Screen Break is a lightweight macOS menu bar app that helps people take real breaks instead of dismissing yet another tiny timer notification. It uses full-screen guided rest screens, a calm countdown, breathing prompts, and simple stretch cues to make stepping away easier.
It is designed for developers, writers, remote workers, students, and anyone who spends long focused sessions at a Mac. Work duration can be set from 30 to 50 minutes, while each rest lasts 5 minutes.
Screen Break also includes practical context awareness. If the user has already been away from the keyboard for a while, the work timer resets instead of forcing a break as soon as they return. If the system appears busy with media, meetings, full-screen activity, or presentation-like use, the break can be deferred.
To keep the habit meaningful, Screen Break adds friendly limits: restarting the work timer is limited to once per day, and quitting is treated as a temporary one-hour pause, also limited to once per day.
The app is free, local-first, account-free, and distributed as a Universal macOS app for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It supports Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, and German.
